The Story Behind the Spoonful of Grandma Sadie Herrig
Don’t let the scale of this image deceive you—this spoon measures no more than five and a half inches from top to bottom. Made of hollow aluminum and light as a feather, Brent Herrig inherited this spoon from his grandmother Sadie. She kept it on the kitchen table or window sill in the sugar bowl for as long as anyone can remember. "My memories and experiences of my grandmother live on through this spoon. For years I wouldn’t touch a raw tomato without adding sugar thanks to Grandma Sadie," Herrig recalls.
As an adult, Herrig has more of a savory palate than a sweet one however, so chose to fill his spoon with just one ingredient: sea salt. "I believe that salt enhances natural flavors in food, whether that be cutting the sweetness of chocolate or helping create the perfectly seasoned steak." While Herrig is the first to admit he isn’t a professional chef, he is an accomplished home cook who likes to keep things simple and let the ingredients shine though with the help of a little salt.
