Ryan Hidinger’s Spoonful Story

Brent created this Spoonful to memorialize chef Ryan Hidinger, an Atlanta-based chef who passed away in 2014. The Atlanta food community banded together to support Ryan and his wife Jen Hidinger-Kendrick during the last year of his life. That support network lives on today in the form of the Giving Kitchen, a non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance grants to Metro-Atlanta restaurant workers who face unexpected hardship, and the restaurant Staplehouse.

“This spoon belonged to my late husband, Ryan Hidinger. He always gravitated to it as he cooked. I remember the times right after he passed, where I could only sit in the hallway overlooking the kitchen, as I wasn’t ready to step foot inside a place he (and I) held so sacred. It took a long time for me to find my own “voice” or position within my home kitchen,
but when I did, I found comfort in using the tools he held so close to his heart, including this spoon.”

Ahead of the Giving Kitchen’s annual fundraiser in 2014, Hidinger-Kendrick sent her late husband’s spoon to Brent, and told him about Hidinger’s favorite foods to cook and eat. Brent did the rest. “I think his piece offers outside-the-box creativity and youthfulness, and hope it provokes the notion that life is what you make of it,” says Hidinger-Kendrick. The first copies of this image were sold at that 2014 fundraiser.
