Jenny Dorsey’s Spoonful Story
Jenny Dorsey’s name belies her Chinese heritage, but her spoonful does not. “I like to think these ingredients represent the building blocks of who I am,” Dorsey said. The homemade wonton in the spoon’s bowl represents her; in fact she still uses her mother and grandmother’s techniques to make wontons. In and around the wonton is a mix of old world and new world ingredients that indicate her evolution not only as a chef, but also as a person. “A chef can be multidimensional, with many aspects of who they were, who they are, and who they want to become. I think the ingredients I used tell that story.”
For Dorsey, the spoon feels like a natural extension of herself. In her estimation, noodle soups make up 75% of her diet, so Asian style soup spoons like the one pictured here get a lot of use in her day-to-day life. This wasn’t always the case however. “I used to avoid using anything ‘Asian’, because I didn’t want to be grouped into everyone else who was Asian, but I hated those pesky European/American spoons. How the heck do people drink soup from those little metal things? UGH! As I became more comfortable with who I am, and proud of my heritage and cuisine, the Asian soup spoon became something I enjoyed featuring as part of my plating and using regularly while eating.”
